WONDERING IF THE WINDOWS IN YOUR HOME NEED REPLACING? ALTHOUGH IT CAN BE A SIGNIFICANT (AND DREADED) EXPENSE, IT IS A WORTHWHILE ONE AS HIGH-QUALITY, WELL-MAINTAINED WINDOWS CAN LAST FOR 20 YEARS (OR MORE).

If you don’t know how old your windows are, or what they’re made of, you probably won’t know when they need replacing. But, to help you decide, we thought we’d let you know about a few signs that become obvious when it’s time to replace your old windows.

  • They’re letting in drafts and cold air: A major sign that that your windows aren’t performing effectively is when they’re letting drafts and cold air in. As they age, double glazing can fail and lose its efficiency. This is the same with single glazed windows which don't provide much protection from drafts and cold air at all.

  • Signs of visible damage: Over time, windows endure a lot so don’t be alarmed if you see a little wear and tear. Whilst general marks and scuffs aren’t anything to worry about, issues such as rotting, mould or damp are cause for concern and could cause damage to your home. Mould and damp often form when windows are cracked and not insulating your home effectively - if these issues occur, it’s time for you to replace your windows.

  • Condensation: One of the most common problems that affects the efficiency of double glazing is condensation. If you start noticing that condensation is gathering on the inside facing glass then this is an indication of a ventilation issue which can be rectified by installing a higher quality window. However, if you notice condensation forming between the two panes of glass then your double glazing has failed and your windows need replacing to avoid further heat loss.

  • Your furniture, carpet or wallpaper is fading: Many modern windows come with UV protection built in. This protection helps to block out sun rays which can cause items in your home to fade. If your windows are old or single pane it's likely that they could be causing carpets, furniture, wallpaper or other surfaces to fade from the exposing UV rays.

  • Your windows are difficult to open or close: Windows that are stiff or difficult to open or close can be a pain. It’s also an indicator that your windows aren’t performing as well as they should be. If they’re shutting by themselves or sticking its worth thinking about getting the windows replaced as they could become a huge inconvenience as well as a health and safety hazard.
